FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. WHAT TYPE OF FRAMING DO YOU USE?
Em Shannon Art uses a Melbourne bespoke framing service especially selected for their high quality frames and archival materials. All frames are handmade in Melbourne from locally sourced sustainable hardwood. Works are dry mounted to an acid free 5 mm foam board using an archival adhesive film. Frames include 3mm museum quality acrylic plexiglass, as also used by the NGV. For more information on framing options click here.
2. WHAT TYPE OF PAPER AND PRINTER DO YOU USE?
End product quality is important, which is why I only settle for the best. Works are printed on specialist fine art papers (300-310gsm cotton rag) using vivid archival pigment inks. Each work displays superb colour expression which you can expect to remain for over 100 years if it is cared for properly (see FAQ 6).
3. WHAT IS YOUR ART PROCESS?
Every artwork starts in my head. The colouring, personality, mood & features are meaningfully considered as I generate a composition. I then approach a high resolution blank canvas. I research my subject matter and reference high quality photographs of the subject where possible. Using a graphics tablet & software I hand paint every stroke of the picture without employing any picture copying or auto painting techniques. Utilising custom made brushes I develop the colours and tones of the subject, gradually pulling out the highlights with finer strokes. I continue to work on many layers, drawing from my skills in traditional painting and enjoying the flexibility of both additive and subtractive techniques offered by a digital medium. As the final work begins to surface the complementarity of the background is refined.
When it comes to custom artworks, once I am satisfied, a draft is sent through to the buyers inbox and they can request changes. I will then send through the modified work and if they have further feedback I will again make further tweaks. Included in every custom work is two reviews (see FAQ 5).
I love the unlimited colour play, minimal setup, fun textural illusions and affordable large format end results that come with this way of doing art. Buuuut occasionally if you were to peer through my window (don't!) you'd catch me dabbling with chunky oil pastels... messily displaying the surface texture that no digital print can beat!
4. CAN I ASK YOU TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
Of course! Please get in contact and I'd love to work with you on your project.
5. WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE CUSTOMISED ARTWORK YOU DO?
You will! I offer 2 free reviews after I show you the first completed 'draft' - so there WILL be opportunity for you to suggest change. Twice. Aaaand I'm a good listener - so far no one has opted to pay the extra fee for another review! If the lack of testimonials or ratings on this site still causes you concern, know that I have only moved into doing custom digital pet and bouquet portraits for friends since mid 2018. As my capacity has increased with another child starting school I've opened up my service to the public as of Jan 2019. It is hoped that as 2019 progresses more people will have more to say about my service - it is for this reason that I now have crowd rating installed on my site. I am so confident to say that you'll like it that if you don't after 3 reviews I'll give you your money back.
6. HOW DO I CARE FOR MY PRINTS?
How you handle your prints is important to ensure maximal archival life! That is why I offer framing on many of my products, to let the professionals deal with it. But if you're saving some bucks and opting to do it on your own here's a few tips -
7. WHAT IS A GICLEE PRINT?
The word giclée in French means squirt or spray, thus "spraying of ink". Giclée printing involves a fine stream of archive rated pigment ink applied to a matt acid-free archival paper using a specialised ink jet printer. The end result is a vivid and detailed exhibition quality fine art print.
8. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPEN EDITION GICLEE PRINT AND A LIMITED EDITION GICLEE PRINT?
Both prints are giclée (see FAQ 7), but an Open Edition Print is cheaper. Why is this? The price of a Limited Edition Giclée Print is higher to account for the fact that there is a limited number of prints in circulation made of that particular artwork. Thus, over a period of time there is a limit to the revenue raised by the selling of Limited Edition Giclée Prints. The smaller the run of limited edition prints, the more exclusive and expensive they will be. Over time the Open Edition Giclée Prints have an unlimited scope to raise revenue (where they are sold) and so they are cheaper to purchase. Limited Edition Giclée prints are also printed on a more expensive paper (310gsm cotton rag), where as the Open Edition Giclée Prints are printed on 188gsm photo rag paper. The visual effect of the two papers is the same, but the weight of the paper is not. Currently on my site only the Limited Edition Giclée Prints (and custom artworks) have the option of being delivered in a frame (see FAQ 1).
9. HOW LONG DOES DELIVERY TAKE?
Within Australia, all Limited Edition Giclée and Standard Giclée prints are processed, shipped and delivered within 2 weeks. If you ordered a custom work, the art production process can take between 14-16 days. After the custom work is printed, framed (if requested) and shipped it's delivery will fall within 30 days of the customer initially purchasing the order*.
*Where 2 or less reviews are needed and the customer responds to drafts within a 24 hour period.

How you handle your prints is important to ensure maximal archival life! That is why I offer framing on many of my products, to let the professionals deal with it. But if you're saving some bucks and opting to do it on your own here's a few tips -
- Handle print only by the edges as the oil from your fingers can reduce the archival qualities of the paper and leave markings.
- Avoid bending the paper as crease marks cannot be removed.
- Carefully remove all packaging and tape when you receive the paper, and if possible leave your print out to breathe and the inks to completely dry before framing.
- Hang your print away from condensation and direct sunlight in an acid-free frame. Some wood frames treated with paint or chemicals can omit harmful gases that attack the ink and paper.
- Use acid-free tape to affix the picture to the inside of the frame where required.
